We are partnering with Impact Africa again to convert a shipping container into a fully functional classroom within their school located at the Kya Sands shanty settlement in Johannesburg. An extra 50 preschoolers will be able to get a quality Christian education every year with the addition of this classroom.

Impact Africa has an ingenious way of transforming old shipping containers into purpose-built classrooms that are fully portable and sustainable. By converting a shipping container into a classroom, we can provide a learning environment conducive to educating children and breaking the cycle of poverty in a country where it is estimated that 4.7 million people are illiterate. Impact Africa aims to set up these schools across informal settlements throughout Southern Africa.

We target preschool and kindergarten aged children because research has found that an individual’s capacity to learn has already been established by the age of 4 years, and thus if children can access learning opportunities by this age, they have 60% more of a chance that they will not drop out of school later in life. We want these children to be inspired to beat the odds, get a quality Christian education in a stable and safe environment, and break the cycle of poverty and illiteracy.

For Project 39 - Cargo to Curriculum - we are going to build a fully functional, sustainable, and safe classroom that will continue to educate South Africa’s future generations! We are reaching out to our giving community to support this project generously and provide refuge and hope to these children of changing their life trajectory with quality education. Give Your Mite to help reach the goal today!

Project Updates:

MAy & June Update

According to a UNICEF report, the number of children out of school tripled in 2021 in South Africa. "This rising inequality in access to learning means that education risks becoming the greatest divider, not the greatest equaliser. When the world fails to educate its children, we all suffer," said Catherine Russell, Unicef's executive director.

The report also noted younger pupils in grades 1 to 3 were the most affected. That's why for Project 39, we focus on building classrooms for pre-schoolers and for the first few primary grades because research shows that if children in this age group can access education, they are more likely to go on and complete their whole education rather than drop out. It's essential to plant the seeds of learning early and nurture them so they may flourish. With the classroom about to be used, we are so excited to see all of the lives that will be changed.

APRIL UPDATE

Growth is an absolute understatement when it comes to Impact Kids! Over the course of a year, we have added 8 classrooms, increasing our capacity for students. Throughout the five schools, we have 500+ students, who are all eager to learn. Their parents are happily sending them to our schools, knowing each student will be provided with a safe and loving learning environment.

Not only is Impact Kids a preschool, but we officially launched the Foundations Phase of our school, meaning we are offering Grade 1, 2 and 3. It’s a privilege journeying with the students and families - from the time they are 2-year-olds to their foundational years in Primary School.

On another awesome note, the teachers at Impact Kids have received reports that the students who graduate from our preschools are going on to perform exceedingly well in their future schools! What a testament to the great and powerful education our students are receiving from our incredible teachers!

We are hopeful and expectant for how God will continue to expand the reach of Impact Kids within Johannesburg and the communities we serve in!

Our fantastic partner Impact Africa turned 18 on March 3rd! Throughout the last 18 years, Impact Africa has impacted 150,000 people, rescued 120 babies, and educated 3,867. In addition, Kya Sands Schools now offers classes from preschool through to the 3rd grade. We are so proud to partner with Impact Africa and are excited to see more lives being changed. Thank you to our giving community for supporting all of this amazing work.

We are so excited to start 2022 with new classrooms, new teachers, a new playground, and so much more for these students. It’s heartwarming to see these kids anticipating the new school year with their new facilities, and we know they’ll learn and accomplish so much through their education. Thank you for helping build and out-fit new classrooms for these bright minds.
